I can’t talk about the impact of Halo without mentioning The Silent Cartographer. The Covenant, Flood, and UNSC teased something bigger that would eventually come to fruition throughout Bungie’s trilogy - and it remains one of gaming’s greatest epics for so many reasons. The story wasn’t afraid to tease a wider universe, even if this first game was a painfully simple adventure of landing on the ring and blowing it to pieces. Future games would humanise him to great effect, but there’s something special about his no-nonsense nature in Combat Evolved and how he hopes to save his comrades while wiping alien flesh beneath his boot. He was a Spartan, a space marine trained to kill and follow orders regardless of the circumstances. Largely useless, but possible.Upon being handed your first pistol as the Covenant breach the ship’s doors, you are trusted to defend this galaxy with your life, and Halo did such a wonderful job of making Master Chief feel like an unstoppable superpower. This feels like a weird question, but also possibly knowable does anyone know how many NPCs of each type spawn in Halo? I know encounters are at least a little randomized, but aside from the beginning of “Keyes” where you’re being encouraged to jump off the ship, I don’t think there are any places that generate infinite enemies, so it should be possible to get a rough population count from the game files. (Alternatively, after you left the area, the Flood was repairing and re-using the combat forms you killed, and the Chief was just being attacked by the same couple hundred infected humans over and over again.) I mean, I guess Chief might feel better that he didn’t kill many of his people when he blew up the Autumn, but it’s still pretty horrifying that the Flood got pretty much everyone. Still, I was playing through the CE campaign on PC the other day, and it occurred to me that, with all the human combat forms you run across, most of the crew must’ve made it to the ring, and most of them must’ve been infected, which made me even sadder than I’d been knowing only a couple people survived at all. Chief was just doing his own thing (maybe Cortana thought bringing in backup would just be giving the Flood more victims the Chief was the only one in an airtight, shielded suit). The novelization and the arcade game “Fireteam Raven” show there was an uninfected population of humans fighting elsewhere on Halo until the bitter end.
